Halloween Block Party Media Release

October 27th, 2013

The City of Athens Block Party ended at approximately 2:25 AM.  Street crews began cleaning up the street after police officers cleared pedestrians at 2:25 AM.  The streets are expected to be open at approximately 5 AM.

The Athens Fire Department had no calls for service.  No major fire related events were reported.

Athens County Emergency Medical Services responded to 53 calls for service.

The Athens Police Department made 45 arrests.  The breakdown of arrests is as follows:

45 prisoners processed through mass booking for all assisting agencies

  • 13 OU Students
  • 13 students from other schools
  • 19 non-students

Total APD charges filed on jailed prisoners as well as cite and release arrests are as follows:

  • 11 Underage Intoxication
  • 14 Disorderly by Intoxication
  • 2 Resisting Arrest
  • 2 Obstruction of Justice
  • 1 Persistent Disorderly Conduct
  • 1 Public Urination
  • 1 Assault on a Horse
  • 3 Assault
  • 2 Underage Consumption
  • 4 Open Container

The Ohio Department of Public Safety Investigative Unit arrest figures were not available as of press time.  Figures will be made available at a later date.

The City of Athens Safety Team consisted of 14 volunteers and were on patrol from 8:30 PM to 1:30 AM.

The City of Athens would like to thank the Ohio University Police Department, Ohio University, State of Ohio Incident Management Team, Athens County Emergency Medical Services, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Department of Public Safety Investigative Unit, the Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal and the many police agencies that assisted the city with the block party.

Weekly Athens Halloween Block Party Safety Tip, TIP #6 – Use some common sense & think before you do something stupid

As the time for the annual Athens Halloween Block Party approaches we will be sending out a weekly safety tip for party goers to keep in mind.

Tip #6 – Lets keep it simple this week!  Use some common sense, think before you do something stupid.  If you make the wrong decision you may end up in jail or the hospital.  Have a safe Athens Halloween Block Party!!

As the time for the annual Athens Halloween Block Party approaches we will be sending out a weekly safety tip for party goers to keep in mind.

Tip #5 – Thirteen Surefire Ways to Get Busted on Halloween in Athens

1.         Drinking or having an open container on a public sidewalk or street.

2.         Urinating in an alleyway or yard.

3.         Walking home alone after drinking uptown, or being drunk by yourself.

4.         Arguing with or running from the police, or refusing to move along if told to.

5.         Throwing anything, especially bottles or cans.

6.         Grabbing someone or pretending to be fighting or wrestling.

7.         Hiding the beer if you see the police enter.

8.         Remaining at the scene if there is an emergency or riot situation, like a couch fire.

9.         Handing money to someone outside the carryout (liquor control will follow you).

10.       Handing alcohol to someone else who didn’t buy it.

11.       Having a party and not checking who comes in and how old they are.

12.       Violating the Noise Ordinance (10:00 pm Sunday – Thursday, 12:00 am Friday & Saturday).

13.       “Ghost hunting”; ignoring “no trespassing” signs or going inside abandoned buildings like the old school building at the Ridges.

Tip #4 – Be aware of who is in your home at all times and ask unwanted guests to leave.

No open containers of alcohol are permitted on any public street or sidewalk, including Court Street.

Halloween Safety Teams

The City of Athens is looking for volunteers to be involved with the Halloween Safety Teams.  The Safety Teams assist with the Halloween event by maintaining a presence in the uptown area and vicinity during the annual block party.  The Safety teams are primarily an information resource for event participants.  If you are interested in volunteering for the Safety Teams, please contact Ron Lucas, Deputy Service-Safety Director at (740) 592-3340 or by email at rlucas@ci.athens.oh.us
